Prospect translation

What "we'll think about it" actually means

It is the most common last sentence in B2B sales, and it almost never means thinking will occur. Here are the seven things it usually means, and the move for each.

Prospects do not lie to be cruel. They lie to be kind, and to escape a conversation that has started to feel like pressure. The polite deferral is a social exit, not a status update. Your job is to read which exit it was.

The seven translations

  1. I am afraid of making a mistake. The most common one. The move: shrink the decision. A pilot, a phase one, a defined off-ramp. Make the yes smaller than the fear.
  2. I cannot sell this internally. They are convinced; the boss is not, and they dread the meeting. The move: arm your champion. Give them the two-line business case they can repeat under pressure.
  3. The price shocked me and I do not want to negotiate. Conflict-avoidant buyers deflect instead of counter. The move: reopen value before price. Never discount into silence.
  4. Something changed on their side. Budget freeze, reorg, a fire drill. Nothing to do with you. The move: lower the temperature, stay human, timebox a return.
  5. A competitor is in the building. They are comparing and do not want to say so. The move: name the comparison respectfully and give them the honest criteria that favor you.
  6. I was never the buyer. You pitched an enthusiast without authority. The move: help them recruit the real decision maker instead of pushing them to decide.
  7. It is genuinely not now. Rare, but real. The move: agree quickly, set a concrete revival date, and be remembered as the one who did not chase.
Try it on a real line: the Prospect Translator reads any sentence a prospect sent you and returns what they meant, what they fear, and the move that reopens the deal. Free.

The one thing all seven share

Every translation points at the same rule: the next message must contain something new. New safety, new framing, new information, new smallness of ask. If your follow-up could have been sent by a calendar reminder, it will be read like one.
